This brings up the question, where do these moments, and ultimately all other knowledge, originate? The study of epistemology has plagued great philosophers for centuries. From Plato’s Cave to Descartes, it’s important to remember no matter what we think we know, we ultimately have much more we simply can’t account for. While this can be frustrating and perplexing (to say the least), we must make every attempt to be open-minded, discerning, and curious as we explore and learn more about what we can know, where this knowledge comes from, and how we can use it to better humanity as a whole. Can we know more than what the eye beholds? Can we bridge the gap between the unknown and the foreseen, and use it as a force for innovating change and for redirecting our choices based on differing states of consciousness? Only time will tell. History has shown that what is not presently known, will become known at some point of time in the future. It is not as if this knowledge does not exist prior to its “discovery”, but we were simply not aware or conscious enough to sense its presence, and to actually “know” it. As we continue to explore and redefine that which at first we did not understand, we too must be open to our dreams, in whatever form they may take.
Future Dreams
Throughout the previous pages we’ve seen there are considered to be a number of types of dreaming, including the daydreaming I was guilty of as a child in school. While most people equate dreaming to something only done at night, we’ve made a case for how dreaming relates to differing levels of consciousness and have also shown how it can even be an awake, alert, daytime-heightened sense of awareness. Are we all connected, as Jung would suggest, by a collective unconscious which enables us to stay connected through the dreams we have while we are awake? One that binds our deepest fears and hidden desires, and connects us all to a wellspring of information suppressed by the secretive depths of our unconscious minds? And are there ways we can un-tap some of those potentials, and explore the possibilities of more knowledge and deeper knowing about what the future holds?
At the time of this writing, there are still many more dreams of the future to contemplate, but they will need to wait for another time. However, one of these very specific dreams, in particular, has been a part of my life for some time. This “dream”, while remaining elusive for long periods, has continued to evolve to this very day. It has been difficult to categorize and fit into any one box, stating it was one specific type of dreaming experience as opposed to another. If I had to classify it, I would say it felt as natural as a daydream, but as powerful as the conviction of a eureka moment. Although they were dreams of a future event, they rarely, if ever, felt like a typical dream. It was never ethereal, whimsical, or airy. It was almost always a strong, conscious knowingness that was not planned, but was merely allowed into my own conscious awareness at its own chosen time. For a long time now, it has carried a significance to it which could not be shaken, and therefore has not been something I could simply ignore.
